Ray and Leslie Mathiasen, Owners

Ray Mathiasen is a former Chief Financial Officer of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, and Leslie is a licensed real estate agent with Coldwell Banker. Ray established RLM Investments to provide a variety of investment advisory services related to the financial markets and real estate, areas in which he gained considerable expertise over a 40 year business career. Ray is a CPA and married to Leslie Mathiasen who serves as a vice president of RLM.

RLM Investments initially provided single race sponsorship for Justin Sofio at Long Beach in 2004, where he convincingly won the C2 class in his first ever Atlantic race. Returning for an expanded program in 2005, RLM backed Justin to a remarkable string of victories culminating in the Formula Atlantic C2 title for the team. RLM's continued support for 2006 saw the team run the full series schedule for the first time, earning 54 Championship points. With an expanded team in 2007, Mathiasen Motorsports completed every race, scored six top ten finishes from 12 starts, earned 114 championship points, and won the Sherwin-Williams "It's All in the Finish" award award for the best presented car in the series for the second year in succession.

Drivers

Our 2 drivers for the 2008 Champ Car Atlantic campaign will be named shortly.

Alain Clarinval, Team Manager and Chief Engineer

A race and design engineer, Alain Clarinval has worked for over 40 years with some of the top teams in major open-wheel and sports car championships in the U.S. and Europe. His extensive background includes roles as Aerodynamicist, Lead Designer, Chief Engineer, Technical Director and Project/Team Manager with teams competing in Champ Car, IndyCar, Formula 1, and Group C sports cars. Alain previously engineered two GT division wins at the 24 Hours of LeMans, and served as Project Manager for the Nissan GTP program. He has also qualified six drivers for the Indianapolis 500.

“This team has the refreshing approach of an owner who wants to create a successful racing enterprise based on team spirit, team work and competent specialists, with compromise only for the non-essential fluff. The results we achieve will demonstrate Ray’s vision and courage to provide what it takes to win a championship."

"I am very satisfied with the team's progress this year, and I believe that we have taken a major step forward. Although we started a bit late, with a lot of dedication and involvement from everyone the team has improved incrementally all season. We now have a very strong base of personnel and equipment which enables us to achieve much greater precision in car set up and in our preparation. We have a lot of faith in these critical elements for success."

Evan Waymire, Data Analysis Engineer

A resident of Portland Oregon, Evan is a mechanical engineer with a clear passion for motor sport that can be traced back to his mid teens where he served as a crew member with SCCA sports cars. Following graduation from Oregon State, Evan competed in the Northwest region SCCA for seven years as a driver/engineer in Formula Ford and Spec Racer classes.

This provided a strong basis of first hand knowledge and experience which led him into Race Engineer positions with Motor Sports Engineering in Portland and more recently with the Transnet Formula Atlantic team. Evan is certainly enjoying his first year with Mathiasen Motorsports.

"I love working with this team. While I'm always hoping for more, I'm pleased with our progress so far this year. We've had excellent reliability and Justin has made the most of his opportunities and ensured that there have been no serious off track excursions. The level of technical competence is very high and I really enjoy the people."

Scott Davin, Chief Mechanic

Scott has deep roots in motorsport beginning with a crew position on his Dad's GTP/WSC sports car team at the age of 13. He has since amassed an impressive resume of positions with some of the top open wheel teams in North America. These included stints as front end and lead mechanic in CART and Champ Car with the Forsythe and PKV teams where he worked with drivers such as Greg Moore, Patrick Carpentier, Alex Tagilani, Brian Herta and Jimmy Vasser. Scott has also served as a lead mechanic in the IRL series with Kelly Racing, Vision Racing and Cheever Racing working with Al Unser Jr., Scott Sharp and Eddie Cheever.

"Mathiasen Motorsports is a young, up and coming team with a lot of potential and I genuinely feel that Ray is one of the top team owners in the business. But you have to learn how to walk before you can run. The team gets stronger every race and we're laying the groundwork for winning. The foundation is in place for a solid team, and watch out this season!"

Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Scott makes his home with his family in Carmel, Indiana where he enjoys spending time 4 wheeling with his 5 year old son and step-sons.

Beginning as a race mechanic in the Barber Dodge series, he subsequently spent eight years as a race mechanic in CART and Champ Car with Patrick Racing and PKV Racing. As Team Coordinator for Mathiasen Motorsports, Mark is primarily responsible for parts purchasing, travel, scheduling logistics, and all of the attendant paperwork to coordinate the activities of team over the course of the season.

"I'ts fun working with the Mathiasen guys. Team management is a new role for me and I'm really enjoying it. We'd still like to do better but this team has great potential."

Mark makes his home in Nobelsville, Indiana with his wife and an energetic two year old.

Initially learning his craft with the Skip Barber Racing School, he subsequently held positions with Velocity Motorsports in the Mazda Pro series, with BK Racing in the American LeMans Series, and with Arms Up Motorsports. Billy's experience with Formula Continental, Formula Atlantic and Sports Prototypes readily applies to his responsibilities on the Mathiasen team's Swift chassis.

"I'm really enjoying working with the Mathiasen team. Everyone's easy to work with and we have great owners who really care about their team. The 2007 season went really well with no DNF's. I'm proud of our reliability record."

Tony Hampshire, WebMaster

Tony Hampshire is a motorsports novelist and school principal from Millarville, Alberta. A former club racer, he is the author of five youth novels in the RedLine Racing series, three of which incorporate Formula Atlantic cars.

Tony first met the Mathiasen team in Edmonton while doing research for his fourth novel in 2005. He currently serves as the team's Webmaster, writer-in-residence, and occasional "Crewman of Last Resort". He views his interactions with the team as a strong benefit to his writing.

"Working with the Mathiasen guys provides me with first hand material that I couldn't get anywhere else. Ray and Leslie have graciously allowed me a window into the adventures of a very determined team in one of the most ferociously competitive racing series in the world. There are few in the Atlantic series who enjoy their racing more than the Mathiasen team, and that's always a story worth telling."
